Perry was born to actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first appearance was in television shows in the role of Jackie Harris, a character which was played by her mother in the ABC show Roseanne. Fearing stress, her parents did not want to see performing before she turned 18. Perry claims she never wanted to be an actor in high school, but she decided to begin performing as a form of social interaction during her time at Northwestern University when she switched to the university from Boston University. Perry went on to New York, where she got small roles on shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness led Perry home to California and theater roles were available. She and her mother starred on Broadway together in The Other Place, in 2013. In 2015 she performed alongside her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry was in nine episodes of The Family, an ABC crime thriller The Family in 2016. Her father portrayed her in the ABC Drama Scandal. Also, she was cast on The CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger of Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. The character was picked through an audition, even having a strong relationship with the show.
